Elephants for Africa (EfA) is a registered charity in England & Wales and NGO in Botswana dedicated to the conservation of the African savannah elephant through research and education. Our research focuses on increasing our understanding of elephant behaviour and on mitigating the conflict they cause with local communities.
We are looking for a passionate and experienced Project Manager to head up our team. Reporting to the boards, the Project Manager has overall management and operational responsibility for Elephants for Africa’s field program in Botswana. This role will involve planning and delivery of a wide range of research, community outreach and environmental education to further our aims. The position requires a postgraduate degree, preferably PhD, in the biological sciences and at least 5 years of work experience in the conservation sector.

Job description
We are looking for a versatile and passionate conservationist
with strong research and analytical skills to lead Elephants for Africa’s program
into the future. The successful candidate will have overall management and
operational responsibility for Elephants for Africa programmes in Botswana.
Responsibilities
- Management of research and community work in the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park and surrounding area. Which includes observations of elephants, camera trap surveys, human-elephant competition for resources, quality checking of data collection and data input, maintenance of database, community liaison
- Prepare data, alongside other staff members, for publications and reports
- Stakeholder engagement and alignment of deliverables with local and national priorities
- Logistic management of research camp: finances, supplies, vehicle, equipment and camp maintenance
- Build and maintain relationships with local stakeholders, including the NGO board, safari operators, ministries, and local communities
- Management of EfA staff, volunteers, and associated students
- On-going review and improvements of research and Community Coexistence Project
- Strategic planning of all deliverables
- Review and assess proposals of potential students
- Coordination and infield supervision of visiting students
Fundraising and communications
- Fundraising applications for continuation of work
- Biannual newsletter contribution and organisation of articles from team members.
- Annual review from the field for Annual Reports
- Quarterly reports Boards and Ministries
- Social media: organising posts from the field
- During and at end of projects, reports and presentations
Qualifications
- Postgraduate degree (preferably PhD) in science, environmental studies, or education
- 5-years’ experience working in the conservation field
- Field research experience, preferably in Africa
- Excellent observational skills
- Excellent communication skills and confidence in public speaking/presenting to wide range of people, including other researchers, local community groups and school-age children.
- Computer literacy in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Access. Statistical analyses, & GIS
- Driving license for a minimum of three years, preferably with 4WD experience
- Camping and navigational skills
- Experience of managing a team of people
