Dear Elephants for Africa Supporters,
As the festive season approaches and we reflect on the impactful journey of 2023, we are thrilled to share some exciting accomplishments with you. This year has been one of growth and impact, and we owe it all to your support and commitment to elephant conservation.
Expanding Horizons:
Elephants for Africa has officially expanded its reach into the village of Rakops, situated just an hour southeast of our main research camp in Khumaga. This expansion is a testament to our dedication to partnering with communities throughout the highest conflict zones along the Boteti River. We have established a satellite hub and most excitedly welcomed two new Community Officers to our team!
Empowering Communities:
Our commitment to supporting human-elephant coexistence has led us to set up new solar-electric fences, a method proven to help protect rural farms from elephants. We have also invested significant time into developing and implementing workshops that focus on coexistence, conservation, and sustainable living. Our team has proudly rolled these programs out across 5 villages and their associated farmlands and cattle posts.
From the Field:
Our elephant conservation fieldwork has been ongoing, with a particular focus on tracking and studying our collared elephants in the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park and beyond. This novel data collected aids in formulating effective strategies for conservation within a rapidly changing human-altered landscape.
Welcoming Guests and Collaborators:
Throughout the year, Elephants for Africa has had the privilege of hosting numerous guests, students, and international researchers. Their presence and collaboration have enriched our programs and contributed to the global dialogue on elephant conservation.
Looking Ahead to 2024:
As we celebrate the accomplishments of 2023, we eagerly anticipate the triumphs and challenges that 2024 will bring. With your continued support, we are confident that Elephants for Africa will make an even greater impact on the conservation landscape.
In the spirit of the holidays, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your ongoing support. May this festive season be filled with joy, warmth, and the knowledge that together, we are making a difference for elephants and the communities they live with.
If you haven’t already, join the herd here!
Season’s Greetings,
Elephants for Africa
